Design of Transpower's Situational Intelligence control room application.

## The brief

Transpower wanted its control room engineers to have a clearer picture of the national power grid. The Situational Intelligence project was the start of that programme: a web application that lets control room users build rules and get alerts from any data point on the grid.

## My role

I led the UX and helped build a custom component library. The team was mostly Transpower engineers, project managers and developers. The project ran during lockdown, so we worked together in Mural and tracked issues in JIRA.

## What I did

I spent much of my time with Transpower's control room engineers, gathering requirements, designing wireframes and working through complex UX flows, especially the permanent rules builder.

The first phase was wireframes. We held regular remote meetings to discuss requirements and acceptance criteria and review the latest screens.

Halfway through, we started turning the wireframes into designs. We refined the components, finished the colour scheme, outlined the forms and handed them to the development team.

## How it was built

We designed the wireframes and the application in Sketch and built the click-through prototype in InVision. Later we moved all the designs to Framer for future prototyping.

The application used Google's Material UI as a baseline, but most components were custom and not dependent on any framework, because the application is expected to outlive today's popular frameworks.
